For the extension of OFC network from Rawalpindi to Karachi and Gwadar, a project was planned named “CPEC OFC PHASE-2 PROJECT” which is essential to reap the true advantages of the Phase-1 Project. It establishes National Backbone ICT infrastructure to reduce reliance on foreign Networks. It would also provide alternate intl connectivity through Gwadar resulting in removal of a single point of failure and would facilitate regional connectivity of China with Afghanistan & Iran. Phase 2 of the project would provide ICT coverage of unserved areas, especially along the Western CPEC Route.
After due diligence and detailed deliberations, Phase-2 was approved by GoP (ECNEC) on 21 Jan 2021. Soft Launching performed by PM of Pakistan at Gilgit on 30 April 2021. The project would be executed on release of funds by the Government.
Following are salient of Phase-II of the project:
● Extension of OFC Network to Gwadar & Karachi along CPEC routes
● Construction of Nodes along the cable deployment route.
● Installation of transmission equipment to increase capacity
● Establishment of Landing Station at Gwadar and Karachi
